Complete Book of Alternate Tunings

Mark Hanson

This book has been selling like hotcakes since its release in late 1995. It is by far the most comprehensive book on the subject of alternate tunings, well surpassing even Mark's previous work on the topic. If you are interested at all in tunings other than standard, this is the book for you. In fact, even if you are interested only in standard tuning, you should consider adding this book to your collection.

There are chapters on 17 of the most popular guitar tunings. Each contains historical information, charts on how to produce the tuning from standard tuning, a unison and octave tuning chart, scales in keys appropriate to the tuning, numerous chord charts, listings of a variety of tunes and artists that use the tuning, plus "waterfall" effect passages that show you how to imitate the sustained sound of a harp that is so common in Celtic music.

You also will find a tremendous section on standard tuning, which includes scale passages on each area of the neck for the eight common major and minor keys. There are copious chord diagrams in this chapter, plus harp like sustained scales for each key. This chapter itself is worth the price of the book.

*REVIEW* by Molly Maher - St. Paul, Minnesota, musician, retail specialist, string winder, producer and friend to the animals.
"Being a lover of open tunings, The Complete Book of Alternate Tunings bent my mind when it first came out. And continues to do so. Mark lays it out in a clear format that's accessible to all. The encyclopedia in the back is worth the price of admission alone!"
